Tight Neck and Shoulders? Here's Why.
Long hours at a desk, working on a laptop, driving, or looking down at your phone can all place extra strain on the upper trapezius muscles. Over time, these muscles become tight and overworked, leading to discomfort and restricted movement.
Common symptoms include:
Neck and shoulder tension
Stiffness when turning your head
Headaches originating from the neck
Poor posture
Reduced shoulder mobility
Why Does It Happen?
The upper trapezius muscles are designed to help support and move your shoulders and neck. However, when we spend prolonged periods sitting or working with our shoulders elevated, these muscles remain under constant tension.
Stress can also contribute, causing people to unconsciously shrug or tighten their shoulders throughout the day.
Without regular movement or muscle release, the tissues become tight, reducing flexibility and making everyday activities less comfortable.
3 Simple Self-Massage Techniques
1. Wall Release
Stand against a wall and position The Ballzac between your upper trapezius muscle and the wall, just below the neck. Lean into the pressure and slowly move up and down or side to side. Pause over any tender areas for 20–30 seconds while breathing deeply.
2. Side-to-Side Release
Maintain gentle pressure with The Ballzac and slowly move your body side to side. This allows the massage balls to glide across the muscle fibres, helping to release tightness and improve mobility.
3. Neck Mobility Stretch
While maintaining gentle pressure on the muscle, slowly tilt your head away from the side being treated until you feel a comfortable stretch. Hold for 10–15 seconds, return to the starting position, and repeat several times.

Physiotherapist's Tip
For best results, perform this routine for 2–3 minutes once or twice a day, particularly after prolonged computer work or exercise. Apply only gentle to moderate pressure and avoid placing The Ballzac directly on the spine.
Ready to Feel Better?
Relieving muscle tension doesn't have to be complicated. The Ballzac was designed by a New Zealand physiotherapist to make targeted self-massage simple, effective and easy to use at home, at work or on the go.
